Support measures ‘not enough to get people through’ – Citizens Advice network

At Citizens Advice we often see the impact of economic change early. Real time data show responses of our clients but also the public in search of reliable information.

This year, in response to the cost of living crisis, our national network has been holding monthly open-invitation briefings*. The dominant theme of the latest (15 December) was consistent growth in demand for crisis support, direct advice and online guidance.

National picture

Among the highlights (‘lowlights’?) were:

  • highest ever need for food vouchers
  • rising debt – energy of course, but rent and council tax too
  • people with disabilities most affected.

The overall national message was that government support measures, welcome though they are, will not be enough to get people through this winter. “The reality is that any short-term impact has been outstripped by combined pressures of sky-high bills and freezing weather.” More details here.

Local trends

Every local Citizens Advice serves a different community. In Epsom & Ewell however we recognise these trends. Problem debt has grown steadily; request for help with benefits has been high led by disability support; and housing continues problematic. Chart: Year to 15 December.

Our Cost of Living page has regular local and national updates.
