Wencelas: taking on fuel poverty

This winter, for the fifth year running, Project Wenceslas has enabled kind citizens in Epsom & Ewell to help local people through a special cold-weather scheme.

If they receive the government Winter Fuel Payment and can afford to pass it on, they donate all or part to Rotary Club of Ewell.

Those in greatest need

All the money goes to people in fuel poverty or struggling with energy bills. On behalf of Rotary, our volunteer advisers at Citizens Advice Epsom & Ewell arrange grants to those in greatest need. There’s still time to help.

Family in ‘eat or heat’ crisis

One person in great need was a mother referred directly to Citizens Advice and the Wenceslas Fund in January. She and her partner and 3 children were facing an ‘eat or heat’ crisis. Her universal credit payment wasn’t due for 6 days and the small amount of credit on the pre-payment meter wouldn’t last until the next payment.

Our adviser colleague responded rapidly and arranged for a Wenceslas payment direct to the client’s bank account early the following day.
