Freeze on Local Housing Allowance could lead to new rent arrears crisis


In its Spring Budget on 15 March the government should reset Local Housing Allowance (LHA) to take account of rising private rents. Continuing the freeze risks causing a new rent arrears crisis.

Since the pandemic rents have risen fast putting new pressure on low-income households in private accommodation.

In recent years the level of support through housing benefit and universal credit has become progressively less generous. In November the government announced it would freeze LHA until 2024. Read the full blog.
